Donuts and Pajamas: Two Things I’d Have Done Differently

Eating donuts in my car with my kids still in their pajamas provide some of my favorite memories of them when they were young. We used to have a good time – or at least as good a time as possible. I can still remember my daughter being able to stand up in the front seat while she would eat a chocolate-covered twisty donut and then get dressed before preschool. (While parked, of course.) The divorce happened when they were about 6 and 2, and I was determined not to let it disr

Yes, We Charge for Consults. Here’s Why.

When was the last time that you got something truly valuable for free? I’m not talking about the pair of ugly socks that you get when you jump on trampolines – those aren’t free. I’m talking about something of value that could change the course of your life and your child’s life. That’s why we charge for our consultations. That’s the value that we seek to provide. Think wheelies and incredibly quick acceleration and the smoothest ride you’ve ever had. When I was about to leave the rental facility, a young man that knew much more about that bike

December 28th! Time to get the Kids!!

It’s today!! Today is the day that many children whose parents don’t live together get to see the other parent for the first time during the 2018-2019 Christmas break! Why? Because this is the arbitrary day chosen by the Texas Legislature in the Texas Standard Possession Order for the transfer of children during the Christmas (“Winter”) break from school. In Section 153.314 the Texas Family Code says, in part: The possessory conservator and the managing conservator shall have

Many non-lawyers, and possibly even some lawyers, think that once a child turns 12, he or she gets to decide who will be the “primary parent.” That is simply not true. Under Texas custody law, one parent or the other usually has the “exclusive right to determine the primary residence of the child” – to most people that means where the child lives.
